Since 1966. the Napili Kai Foundation has worked to preserve the Hawaiian culture by passing it along to the children of Maui.

Hula is an important part of Hawaiian culture, so dance instruction is emphasized in the Foundation's program. Trained by kumu hula, or hula teachers, youngsters practice during the week and on Tuesdays get the opportunity to perform for audiences at the Aloha Hale Pavillion at Napili Kai Beach Resort.

Studying Polynesian cultures, the children learn infinitely more: pride in their forebears and respect for their wisdom... commitment and confidence in the mastering of ancient skills... cooperation that begins with learning hula steps in harmony and ends in lasting friendships. The foundation maintains a strict code of behavior - including prohibiting smoking, drinking, and drugs - and has a waiting list of children eager to join.

Throughout the years, in the sharing of self which is the essence of aloha, Foundation youngsters give free performances at hospitals, children's organizations, homes for the elderly, and benefits for non-profit organizations. For a few, the Foundation has even been the springboard to a professional performing career. For all, it is a maturing and enriching experience.

All expenses - instruction, costumes, implements, even some travel - are paid for entirely by the Foundation from contributions it receives. Inspired by the belief that, like a tree, a people cannot flourish cut from their roots, the Napili Kai Foundation is keeping Hawaii's culture alive in the hearts and minds of the young, and passing on a most priceless gift to us all.
